What's New in Business Central Update 28.0
Business Central 2026 Release Wave 1 (28.0) is now available and has been widely deployed for many Business Central environments. So we will be taking a look at some of the key new features available. But before we do, here are a couple key links you can use to do your own additional research on some of the new features and functionality included with 28.0.
As I explained in the video, the 2026 Release Wave 1 plan includes everything Microsoft plans to deploy between April 2026 and September 2026. So many of the new features included on the "What's New" link below have not been deployed with version 28.0. Some of these will be deployed with 28.1, others in 28.2, etc.

As usual, I have published a video (this one is about 17 minutes) where I talk and walk through some of the key new features included in 28.0 - CHECK IT OUT!!!
New Feature Highlights from 28.0:
Business Central MCP Server Overview and Setup - Business Central | Microsoft Learn
Currently, Microsoft has deployed the Sales Order Agent and the Payables Agent. With this new feature, custom agents can be created within Business Central to complete tasks. This allows organizations to incorporate their own tailored agents into their process workflows to optimize and improve efficiency and output.
Financial Reporting enhancements | Microsoft Learn
This is listed as a single improvement, but it is indeed an entire series of improvements made to how Financial Reports (formerly known as "Account Schedules) are created, generated, and distributed. As a former accountant and lead cheerleader for the functionality that Financial Reports provides, I am very excited about these improvements!
The best and most significant change is what is often called a "Report Streamer". On the Financial Reporting page, a new button exists called "Schedule". This allow you to setup a financial reporting schedule by which selected Financial Reports are run and then distributed to a list of recipients via email. You can set up an unlimited number of report schedules so that different users can receive different reports at different frequencies.
Quality Control functionality has been added to the standard product. This includes quality tracking against Purchase Order receipts, Production Order output, and other types of documents.
Create purchase orders from drop shipments | Microsoft Learn
There are actually 3 new features related to drop shipment processing, all of them adding some long overdue efficiency improvements related to the creation and management of drop shipment type Sales Orders and Purchase Orders.
Finally, I have detailed below the suggested steps for how to best prepare your environment and organization for any upcoming major release, as well as some additional links regarding this topic.
Suggested steps to Prepare for a Major Update to Business Central:
Review the list of new features to be included in the next major update to familiarize yourself with which new features your organization may be able to leverage and what changes your users should expect.
For version 28.0, here is the list:
Assuming you are set up to receive Notifications within the Business Central Admin Center, when you receive the email that the update to version 28.0 is available and/or scheduled, use the Admin Center to complete the following:
Create a new Sandbox environment using a copy of the Production environment.
Schedule this new Sandbox environment to be updated ASAP.
Schedule the Production environment update date far into the future.
Once you receive notification that the Sandbox has been updated, perform testing of existing functionality. Also, consider testing some of the new functionality if it is expected to be deployed and utilized immediately upon completion of the update.
Once you are comfortable with the update, re-schedule your Production environment update based on a date and time that will best serve the organization.
